Earlier, I had posted about Shia Labeouf bashing the Wii,  now, there’s another Transformers star who has mentioned the Nintendo Wii in an interview. If the picture or post title didn’t give away who it is, let’s say the person sounds much more adept and intelligent towards gaming, and is someone who’s picture I enjoyed putting on the site. Of course, I enjoy the picture more for the car as I’m a huge Camaro fan. In fact, the new Camaro in the movie is downright sweet!

Anyway, the star is Megan Fox. Megan was interviewed by WhatTheyPlay, and after reading the interview I hold a new found respect for the actress.

She was first asked what games she played while growing up,

Megan Fox: My first gaming console was the Super Nintendo when I was about nine, and my first game was Aladdin. I remember playing that as a wee child. I’ve always really loved video games. Some of them, unfortunately, I’m not very good at playing, but some of them I’m kind of a badass at.

Aladdin. On the Super Nintendo. I remember playing that game non-stop while being bed-ridden in a hospital when I was 12 years old. My goal was to beat the game before I was discharged, which I did.

What are your thoughts on all of the video games for girls they’re releasing these days?

Megan Fox: Like what?

Like Wii Fit.

Megan Fox: Why is Wii Fit for girls?

Because it’s all about Yoga and stuff.

Megan Fox: And yoga is about girls? I know who would disagree with that statement. Sting. Sting would tell you that’s not true. That’s why his ass looks the way it does. He’s done years of yoga.

I think she does make a valid point here…

Megan Fox: I think it’s all relative. What is a girl video game and what is not is relative to the type of girl that you are. I think the reason more girls are into gaming is because parents are buying girls more game consoles. And giving them the access to video games. Maybe a few years ago it wasn’t that way.

She goes on in the interview to talk about how the Wii is making games active, and that it’s a good direction to take.  Also, her statement about ‘girl video games’ speaks volumes.

Shia Labeouf was interviewed by Big Download. In the interview he talks about his history with gaming.

I’ve been a fan of Labeouf ever since Even Stevens. However, this interview just goes to show how arrogant the actor really is. Seriously, who is he kidding?

Here are a few quotes I picked out from the interview that any Nintendo Wii fan should find amusing…

(BD) – What’s the last game that really impressed you?

(Shia) – Sid Meier’s Civilization.

(BD) – You play everything including real-time strategy?

(Shia) – Buddy, I’m a gamer. Not just the fake ones you read about.

(BD) – Have you checked out the Wii Transformers game?

(Shia) – I haven’t been able to play the Wii game because my hand is broken. I’ve just been playing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I would imagine that the Wii experience will be like… I don’t mess with the Wii, to be honest with you. It’s kind of an amateur console. I’m not into the Wii thing.

(BD) – What’s wrong with the Wii?

(Shia) – This is how in a simple way you can find out if it’s a gamer you want to play with. Ask them if they have a Wii. If they say yes, get the f*** out of there.

I don’t think Shia would know what a real gamer looked like if he had one staring him in the face. Notice how he uses his hand as an excuse to not play the Wii, but he has no problem playing the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.

To start with, they encourage critical thinking. Many games, especially those like Mario and Zelda, have tons of puzzles in them. Kids don’t realize it, but playing video games allows them to learn how to solve problems, to think logically, to think outside the box, and to never, ever give up. Remember how you used to spend hours trying to find out what you needed to do in order to get through that dungeon in The Legend of Zelda? Studies have shown that kids who play video games at least weekly do better in math and have better problem solving skills. All of these are positive things. Another thing games enhance is reflexes and hand eye coordination. I know this doesn’t sound like a huge thing, and it isn’t, but it is far from a bad thing as well.

In fact, if you’ve ever had the chance to play Halo for the X-Box, you’ll know firsthand that it requires strategy and critical thinking (when you’re playing a campaign of course). In the harder setting, like Legendary, it’s very, very tough to get through the various levels without having some sort of strategy. You can’t just go in guns blazing, otherwise you’ll be killed in about two seconds flat.

And yes, too many video games can be a bad thing (of course, that is true with virtually anything in life). And yes, the wrong games can do more bad than good for young kids. I’m telling everyone to not let their 5 year old play The Conduit. We don’t need them having nightmares about vampires and werewolves invading their home and…well, you get the picture. But a good Mario or Zelda or other game appropriate for young kids is not a bad thing, it’s a good thing. So, let your children play those games. Not only will you be helping them as a child, I’m sure you will have a pretty happy young kid as well. In fact, you can even use video games as a reward. How great is that! Plus, I know you will enjoy them too (you know you love them). No reason to hide that anymore. You can thank me later ;)
