Nintendo unveiled a range of new titles for the Wii this morning at its annual E3 press conference, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Golden Sun DS. However, Nintendo US president Reggie Fils-Aime shocked the audience with one final reveal towards the closing moments. A new Metroid game is in the works, and the publisher is collaborating with Tecmo’s Team Ninja to bring Metroid: Other M to the Nintendo Wii in 2010. Other M features the Samus Aran that fans love. However, the game’s presentation and story look like quite a departure from Retro Studio’s three previous Metroid Prime titles.

We saw a brief trailer during the press conference, and it looked visually stunning from the outset. The trailer began on an undisclosed planet with a female scientist having a conversation with an officer, referred to as Captain, most likely from Aran’s employer, the Galactic Federation. The game looks like it will feature many of Metroid’s classic elements, such as boss fights with massive creatures, including a gigantic insect that Aran climbed onto during the trailer. It looks like it will offer both a third-person perspective and a first-person visor view a la Prime.

Aran looks like she’ll have some friends along the journey, and in the trailer we saw a spacesuit-wearing man talking to her. Aran’s face is clearly visible through her face mask at one point in the trailer, and we also saw her briefly talking to a female scientist. Fils-Aime said Other M would be a Metroid experience “unlike any other” and would take players deeper into Samus’ story and the Metroid universe. Metroid: Other M will be coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii in 2010.
