Dead Space Extraction Preview

Terror strikes the USG Ishimura, but this time on the Wii.

If there’s one thing that Dead Space proved, it’s that you don’t need to reinvent a genre to be successful. It was a game that took plenty of the best, tried-and-true elements of survival horror, mixed in a few novel features of its own, and topped it off with an intensely chilling atmosphere that stands as one of the best in recent memory. In fact, what might be an even bigger risk for the team at EA Redwood Shores is taking everything that made Dead Space great and applying it to the Wii hardware for the upcoming Dead Space Extraction. This prequel was first announced back in February, though we recently had our first look at the game in the form of a brief gameplay demo at a recent EA press event.

In my previous post I posted the video interview and gameplay. Be sure to check that out at Dead Space Extraction Gameplay.

Cursed Mountain Wii Preview & Gameplay Videos

The Wii exclusive, developed & published by Deep Silver, looks to take the horror genre into a whole new realm. Instead of two-headed aliens, creepy little girls, disgusting zombies or T-Virus infected dogs, Cursed Mountain is more of a psychological thriller. You will play as Eric Simmons, a man on a mission to find his brother who went missing on an expedition in the Himalayas.

As the protagonist, your goal is to scale the mountain until you find him. The problem is, along the way, Eric starts to lose it a bit. You see, he starts to encounter the ghosts of men who were claimed by the mountain. Eric began his journey a sane man, and along the way he fears that the isolation combined with lack of oxygen are playing tricks on him. Or, is there really an evil presence on the mountain that has targeted him as its next victim?

When you encounter one of these spirits you will need to enter their realm and begin combat. The combat is going to be a gesture system supposedly based on symbols of prayers or mantras. After you have defeated a spirit, they are free. Basically, you aren’t killing them or doing them harm, but freeing them of the mountain.

LIT First Impressions

LIT

LIT is one game that I’ve been looking forward to since I first heard about it. Last night I took a chance, and decided to download the game to see what it was all about. I only got to play about 20-30 minutes of it, but I’m definitely glad I did. (more…)

Lit for WiiWare Releases Feb. 9

So, your fine host has been experiencing technical difficulties out the wazoo recently, so I’ve not been as timely with the blog as I perhaps should be. Hopefully I can get it all sorted out soon enough. But, do not fret because I have been trying to keep up to date on all things Wii.

The other day I found a trailer on IGN that made me giddy with excitement. This excitement was doubled by the fact that it was a Wiiware title. The game is Lit. In it you play a high school kid, Jake, who comes to school one day to find all the power out, his girl (Rachael)l kidnapped and creepy crawlies ready to take him if he steps out of light. Throughout the game Jake will be kept in contact with Rachael through the schools phone system. She will call him with hints about what is going on, how it happened, and other clues about finding her and unraveling this mystery. The coolest part is that she won’t stay on the line, you have to answer in a timely manner, which means you’ll have to navigate through the monsters to get there. The game is a sort of horror/survivor/puzzler. Jake goes into a dark room, and must make his way to the exit, all without ever touching darkness. He can light up lamps, break windows, or use various other light sources to make his escape. Lit is developed by WayForward Technologies, and is set to release next Monday, Feb. 9 for 800 points. I can say, based on what I’ve read and the trailer I’m posting below, it’s going to be well worth it.
