600,000 DSi’s sold in America, Europe

Posted under DSi News

Fresh off its success in Japan, the new camera- and browser-enabled handheld sells 300,000 units in each territory during its first two days on the market.

When it went on sale in Japan last November, the DSi proved quite popular. In its first two days at retail, the dual-camera- and Web-browser-equipped portable sold more than 170,000 units. In its first month on sale in the island nation–where DS ownership rates are even higher than in the US–more than 535,000 units of the handheld were purchased.

The third time is apparently the charm.

Today comes word that the DSi has proved as popular in the West. Speaking at a Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan lunch in Tokyo, attended by NPR, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the handheld sold more than 600,000 units in 48 hours in North America and Europe. The device went on sale in the EU on April 3 and in the US on April 5 and sold 300,000 units in its first two days on the market in each territory.

Unveiled last October, the DSi is 12 percent thinner than the DS Lite, with screens 17 percent larger than those of its predecessor. Though it doesn’t have a Game Boy Advance slot, it boasts two cameras–an outward-facing 0.3 megapixel one and a lower-resolution one for self-portraits–and an SD card slot for multimedia storage. The third redesign of the 100-million-unit handheld also sports a built-in Internet browser, which will let users directly download games from a new online store. The DSi retails for $169.99 in the US and for £149.99 in the UK.

Fatal Frame Not Coming to US

Tecmo confirms that Nintendo has declined to publish Grasshopper-developed horror game outside Japan.

The success of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition and House of the Dead: Overkill have shown that there’s a place for horror games on Nintendo’s latest system. Unfortunately, Nintendo is apparently unconvinced of that, given that Tecmo has confirmed to GameSpot that Nintendo has declined to publish the Wii installment of its survival horror franchise Fatal Frame in North America and Europe.

SAN FRANCISCO–Three years ago at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata urged developers to “think differently” and disrupt the status quo. In November of that year, his firm did just that with the launch of the Wii. Insanely popular from the get-go, the console was nearly impossible to find at retailers during its first year on the market.

Posted under DS News,Wii News

Microsoft’s console makes rare appearance atop Media Create’s retail recap, thanks to debut of Square Enix’s top-selling Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

The Xbox 360 isn’t what most people would call a “hit” in Japan, but the console does catch a few breaks every once in a while. For the week of February 16-22, that break came in the form of Square Enix’s Xbox 360-exclusive Star Ocean: The Last Hope. In its first week on the Japanese market, the Tri-Ace-developed sci-fi role-playing game achieved sales of 162,000 units, pushing the Xbox 360 past the Wii and PlayStation 3 in total weekly sales, according to Media Create.

Microsoft couldn’t have said it better.

On the week, Media Create’s charts reflect that the Xbox 360 sold 25,334 units. In a tight race, the Wii just edged out the PlayStation 3, selling 16,973 consoles to 16,149 for Sony’s flagship. Handhelds were a different story, as the DSi–which launched in Japan in November–sold 41,839 units, while the PSP shifted 29,552 systems. The DS Lite, which is sold alongside the DSi as it will be in other regions, also moved an additional 9,975 units.

With Star Ocean taking the top slot, Mario & Luigi RPG 3!!! for the DS placed second, selling 62,000 copies in Japan. Namco Bandai scored a trio of chart-toppers on its release of the Idolmaster SP trifecta Perfect Sun, Missing Moon, and Wandering Star, which sold a respective 46,000, 39,000, and 35,000 units. Sega’s Shining Force Feather for the DS debuted in the sixth slot, selling 30,000, while Capcom’s perennial best-seller Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G moved an additional 18,000 units.

Titles for Sony’s systems rounded out the remainder of the chart. Flight-Plan’s Sacred Blaze sold 17,000 during its first week on the market, a figure nearly matched by the PS3 edition of Street Fighter IV. From Software’s Demon’s Souls rounded out Media Create’s weekly recap, taking the 10th slot with 15,000 units sold.

Tenchu Set to be Released Today!

Posted under Wii Game Releases

Ok, this may be one of my last posts on Tenchu: Shadow Asssassins, which is sad in of itself. The game looks amazing. It looks to be a return to the roots of the PS1 classic we all knew and love. Rikimaru and Ayame are back and strictly on our beloved console! I’ve read IGN’s review and they say the game is quite good, not perfect but still impressive. There are flaws of course but, that is to be expected. In my opinion, this game represents the coming out party for the Wii. Developers are going to start pumping out hardcore games for players who want them, and boy do we want them. I believe this year the Wii and Ninty will step out of the shadows and become one of the best consoles available for games that don’t need waggle and 3-4 people to be entertaining. And it all starts with Tenchu! Gametrailers has posted an epic Japanese trailer for the game, enjoy it below.
