Red Steel 2 Nintendo Wii Updated Hands-On Impressions

Science has proven that cowboys and ninjas are mortal enemies, and now Ubisoft is here to show us why.

With its heavy focus on first-person swordfighting, the original Red Steel was met with disappointment from those expecting the Wii Remote to deliver precise replications of their every gesture when the system first launched. The time between then and now has proved that the remote was never really suited for those high hopes, but now that the Wii MotionPlus attachment has been released, there’s a new opportunity for developers looking to deliver on those early ambitions. Naturally, Ubisoft is looking to do this with Red Steel 2. We just checked out a quick demo at GamesCom 2009 after first seeing the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this past June.

Red Steel 2 Nintendo Wii Hands-On

Ubisoft’s Red Steel sequel was playable at E3 09, and we wasted no time jumping on the game at the company’s booth.

Red Steel 2 is an interesting proposition. It’s the sequel to a game that was poorly received upon release, but the developers genuinely seem to have learned a lot from the experience. The sequel has a completely different story to the original, and, in fact, the only thing that the two games have in common is the gun/sword-based combat. We managed to play the game for the first time today at the LA Convention Center, as well as find out more about it with lead designer Roman Campos Oriola.

Red Steel 2 Nintendo Wii Demo Impressions

Ubisoft presented the first gameplay demonstration of this Wii MotionPlus-enhanced sequel.

At the company’s E3 2009 press conference today, Ubisoft’s Jason Vandenberg demonstrated Red Steel 2, offering a taste of how the game improves on its predecessor, with an emphasis on how the required Wii MotionPlus will benefit the experience.

The demo opens with our unnamed hero–a cross between a gunslinger and samurai–waking up in a desert to find a pack of vultures circling overhead. Unfortunately, that’s but the start of our hero’s problems, given that the sound of a revving motorcycle interrupts the moment and peels off across the sand. It quickly becomes apparent that our hero is along for the ride, as a rope tethering him to the cycle drags him across the harsh terrain…and we don’t use that word lightly. We’re talking being dragged across roads, through flames, and barely avoiding being crushed by an 18-wheeler. It was a visually arresting opening that helped set the stage for the action-packed sequences that followed.

Here’s the E3 video of Red Steel 2. All I gotta say is that it looks absolutely awesome… Enjoy!

Red Steel 2 Confirmed for Wii Motion Plus Only

It’s been confirmed that Red Steel 2 for the Nintendo Wii is being developed for the Wii Motion Plus addon only. This means that if you don’t plan on purchasing the WMP addon, then you won’t be able to play Red Steel 2.

I really don’t know why you wouldn’t want to get WMP as it will give you one-on-one controls, meaning pinpoint accuracy during swordplay and gun weilding. All I can say is that this is a smart move on behalf of the creators.

“It’s a huge risk,” said Red Steel 2 creative director Jason Vandenberghe. “We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high.”

Here’s a trailer of Red Steel 2 for your enjoyment!
