Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Nintendo Wii Updated Impressions

Sonic is the fastest hedgehog on foot, but how does he fare when he’s put behind the wheel of a racing car? Pretty good, it turns out.

Sonic’s back again, but this time, he’s switched his red running shoes for a shiny racing car. Sega All-Stars Racing is coming out early next year on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS and is being developed by Sumo Digital (GTI Club Plus, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, Virtua Tennis 2009). We checked out the PS3 version at GamesCom 2009 in Cologne, Germany.

Sonic: The Black Knight Trailer

A few weeks ago I posted a trailer up about Sonic: The Black Knight. I was, and still am, a bit iffy on whether this game will actually be any good. Of course, I am a bit biased due to the hours I spent on my Genesis playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Generally, I’m not exactly sure how I feel about complete overhauls of a franchise. Yes, I know that it was needed and the gaming market is different, but Sonic is a well known and highly loved character. Putting him in an action/adventure title is something I see as borderline blasphemous. However, the game is set to drop on March 3, so Sega has released a new all gameplay trailer. It actually looks pretty good. I really liked the way the cut scene seemed to look, and the speed of it seemed in keeping with Sonic tradition. Hopefully, this game is good, or at least ok. If not, I fear that Sonic may be seeing his final days and will be relegated to being a guest or co-star of other titles.

Secret of Mana for Virtual Console coming out on Boxing Day

Posted under Wii Game Releases

Nintendo plans to add brilliant Square Enix Super Nintendo action role-player Secret of Mana to the Wii Virtual Console on Boxing Day.

This is one of our all-time SNES favorites, and at 800 Wii Points (GBP 6 / EUR 8 approx) we’ve no need to be asked twice. Consider the three-player co-op, upgradable weapons, ridable dragon and epic plot and you shouldn’t need much prompting either. Punchable rabbit-things, too. Even now the words “ring menu system” give us chills.

The same day also hails the arrival of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the days of the Master System. Sonic was good back then, and at 500 Points (GBP 3.50 / EUR 5 approx) it’s a cheap trip down memory lane, where Tails is invited to cross the road without looking. Splat.
